Prep roundup: St. Francis, Mitty baseball upset WCAL foes, Piedmont Hills softball pitcher strikes out 20 on Tuesday (2024)

Baseball

St. Francis 9, No. 14 Bellarmine 4

St. Francis put up two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to rally past Bellarmine in a West Catholic Athletic League game. Luke DeVine was 3 for 3 with a home run and five St. Francis RBIs to spearhead the offense, while Jedd Chang and Mack Mrowka had two RBIs apiece.

Brent Valentine had three hits and Gino Cappellazzo had two hits for the Lancers, who improved to 7-8-1, 1-3-1. Bellarmine senior Matthew Vlahos was 1 for 3 with two RBIs, and teammate Evan Tavarez had two hits and scored twice. Bellarmine dropped to 10-7, 3-2.

No. 17 Archbishop Mitty 6, No. 6 St. Ignatius 5

After giving up four runs in the top of the fifth, Mitty trailed by three runs. The Monarchs composed themselves after the rough inning, and put up four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame as the San Jose school came away with the win.

Right fielder Tanner Kern had a huge day for Mitty, hitting two doubles and driving in four runs. Luka Pintar and Waylon Walsh each had an RBI for Mitty too, which improved to 10-7-1, 2-2-1 after the WCAL win.

St. Ignatius center-fielder Emmett Johnson was 2 for 4 with three RBIs, and Rocco Giometti had two hits as the Wildcats fell to 12-4, 3-3.

Sacred Heart Prep 2, Menlo School 0

Records can be thrown out the window for rivalry games, and Sacred Heart Prep’s stunner against Valparaiso Avenue neighbor Menlo School proved whey that truism exists.

Sacred Heart Prep, which entered the game with a 5-12 record compared to Menlo School’s 12-6 mark, got RBIs from Rallin Covey and Max Courson.

Gator pitching took over from there, with Devin Saltzgaber throwing six innings and striking out 10. Covey then closed out the seventh with two strikeouts. Menlo’s Ryan Schnell pitched admirably in the loss by striking out eight in a complete game.

Sacred Heart Prep improved to 6-12 while Menlo School dropped to 12-7.

No. 2 Acalanes 9, Northgate 3

Acalanes cruised to another victory and extended its undefeated start to 15-0 in a win against Diablo Athletic League opponent Northgate.

David Gonzales had two hits and scored four runs, but his most impressive feat was stealing seven bases for Acalanes. Benji O’rourke and James Stadt each drove in two runs, and Ando Butner had two hits and an RBI for the Lafayette program, which improved to 8-0 in league play.

Northgate’s Vincenzo Macaluso had an RBI off Acalanes pitching, which got six solid innings from Peter Thorn and a scoreless seventh from Brady Quinn.

Alameda 9, Encinal 1

Alameda rolled past Island rival Encinal in the Willie Stargell Classic tournament. Alameda starting pitcher Max Cohen kept Stargell’s alma mater in check, throwing six scoreless innings and striking out six.

Jaden Noonan had two RBIs for Alameda, and teammates Luis Sanchez, Kayden Thai, Archie Schullstrom and Cole Aney each had RBIs. Alameda improved to 9-6 and 2-2 in the West Alameda County Foothill League, while Encinal fell to 8-7 and dropped to 4-1 in league play.

No. 20 College Park 5, Campolindo 0

College Park senior Nathan Leffel threw seven scoreless innings and struck out six as the Falcons blanked DAL opponent Campolindo. James Voorhies had two RBIs, and Samuel Johnston had one RBI. Connor Berkowitz, Leffel, Collin Bankard and Vincent “Tino” Vassell each had two hits for College Park (8-5, 4-2). Blake Robison had two hits for Campolindo (7-5, 2-2)

Softball

No. 8 Hillsdale 1, Capuchino 0

With a runner on first and a shaky defense lining the infield, all HIllsdale’s Sophia Shelton had to do was put the ball in play to make good things happen. An error on Shelton’s ground ball helped get Liana Mack home all the way from first base.

That was all HIllsdale hurler Alexis Kuka needed to win the pitcher’s duel. Kuka allowed just one hit and struck out five in a complete game, while Capuchino’s Lola Sierra allowed only two hits in six innings.

Hillsdale improved to 15-1 and 5-1 in Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division play, while Capuchino fell to 5-9, 3-2.

Valley Christian 12, Wilcox 0

Hannah Paquiz and Makenna Sieling combined to throw five hitless innings and strike out seven in Valley Christian’s run-rule win over Wilcox. Talia Haskins was 3 for 3 with two RBIs, while Soledad Healy had a hit and three RBIs.

Charlotte Coney had one hit and two RBIs for the Warriors, who improved to 9-7. Wilcox dropped to 4-13 in the non-league game.

Piedmont Hills 7, Santa Clara 0

Sophom*ore Isabella Flores was one walk away from a perfect game. Instead, she had to settle for a 20-strikeout – yes, 20 strikeout – seven-inning no-hitter.

70 of her 96 pitches were for strikes.

Madison Montez was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Flores helped her own cause by driving in a run as Piedmont Hills led 7-0 after three innings. Jordyn Guzman drew a walk and was Santa Clara’s only baserunner.

Piedmont Hills improved to 10-3, while Santa Clara dropped to 6-8.

No. 18 James Logan 19, Mission San Jose 0

James Logan stayed perfect in the MIssion Valley league by run-ruling Mission San Jose by putting up 16 hits and four walks.

Janessa Parras was 2 for 3 with four RBIs and three runs, and Ava Medellin, Isabelle Gomez, EJ Delgadillo and Shannon Garcia each had two hits and two RBIs apiece. The Mustangs improved to 12-1, 5-0 while Mission San Jose dropped to 4-7, 2-3.

No. 11 Amador Valley 5, No. 5 California 1

Amador Valley scored three runs in the fifth inning to pull away from California in a matchup of ranked teams. McKenna Charbonneau was 1 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs, and Taylor Oxe and Ava Davis each had two hits and one RBI.

Amador pitcher Kaylee Davis allowed just one run and struck out five in a complete game against her EBAL opponent. The Dons improved to 7-5, 4-2, while California fell to 6-3, 4-1.

No. 4 Livermore 6, No. 10 San Ramon Valley 4

Livermore jumped out to a five-run lead by the end of the fourth inning, and then held on after San Ramon Valley staged a mini-rally by scoring three runs over the last two innings.

Annie Polaski had three hits and two RBIs and Laine Macosky had two hits and scored one run for Livermore, which improved to 12-3 and 5-1 in East Bay Athletic League play. Meanwhile,

Isla Higgins had two RBIs for SRV (7-7, 4-2), and teammates Sophia Jin and Addie Layous each had two hits.

Heritage 27, Deer Valley 0

Heritage senior Brooklynn Galloway was 4 for 5 with four runs and five RBIs as Heritage routed its Bay Valley opponent. Amaya Gilmore also had five RBIs on just two hits, and Meadow Wachtel was 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

Melina Fuentes walked five times and scored three runs for Heritage, which improved to 5-6, 2-0. Deer Valley dropped to 0-9, 0-3.
