DIY Beard Balm Recipe for a Softer Beard! (1)

I’ve created the best beard balm recipe that is 100% natural, safe and just as good as any over the counter balm you can find. That’s a pretty co*cky statement but I stand by it! A healthy beard is the goal and with that includes healthy facial skin underneath. By using essential oils which have strong anti-inflammatory properties, you are adding skincare to your balm as well as scent. With a fantastic scent, incredibly nourishing oils and butters and natural beeswax, this recipe has every angle covered.

With so many men sporting beards these days, beard enhancing products are an absolute must. And let’s face it, a beard can either be really good or really bad!I have abeard oil recipebut upon doing some research, a beard balm and a beard oil are two different products with different results! I’ll explain more below….

First off-balms are very easy to make. They just take a little bit more effort than a serum because they contain a carrier oil and sometimes a butter and both of those ingredients must be heated.

The main difference between a serum and a balm is the consistency due to beeswax.Beeswax thickens an oil into a solid consistency.Beeswax is beneficial for the hair and skin because it helps to coat and protect. It also gives texture to hair. Be warned, according to several sources of men with beards, adding too much beeswax can make a beard feel crunchy.

A beard balm will help moisturize the skin under the beard as well as the hair.A beard balm is also going to add hydration to the skin and hair but it will add texture and extra moisture as well.Since a balm is solid, it is also less messy with no chance of dripping.

What is Beard Balm?

Beard balm is a solid oil product used to tame, create shine and moisturize beards and the skin underneath the beard. It contains a special blend of oils and wax that are perfect for facial hair different from what you would use to style the hair on your head.

Why A DIY Beard Balm:

  • Moisturize and condition facial hair
  • Keep a beard feeling soft and looking shiny
  • Prevent beard dandruff, itch, and skin irritation
  • Reduce split-ends and breakage to maximize growth
  • Make a beard look thicker
  • Give a light hold for styling
  • Tame stray hairs.
  • Remedy beard itch.

DIY Beard Balm Recipe

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 20 minutes

Make your own DIY beard balm with natural ingredients like beeswax, shea butter and jojoba oil with a manly blend of different essential oils to stop hair loss and reduce irritation under the beard. Whether you are looking to tame your own beard or want to make this homemade beard balm for the bearded man in your life, you've come to the right place!

Materials

  • 2 tbsp. Jojoba Oil
  • 2 tbsp. Shea Butter
  • 2 tbsp. Beeswax
  • 6 drops Scotch Pine Essential Oil
  • 3 drops Lemon Essential Oil
  • 2 drops Clove Bud Essential Oil
  • 2 drops Cedarwood Essential Oil

Tools

  • Medium sized pot
  • Glass Pyrex Measuring Cup
  • 4 ounce glass jar
  • Stir stick or spoon

Instructions

    1. Make a double boiler by filing a small saucepan half way full with water.
    2. Place a glass pyrex cup in the pot and turn heat to medium.
    3. Add all ingredients except essential oils to the glass cup and heat until butters and wax is thoroughly melted.
    4. Remove from heat and add essential oils.
    5. Pour into a 2 oz. glass jar and allow to cool and thicken.

Notes

  • I kept this recipe super simple.Jojoba oil is a no fail oil because it's non comedogenic and has no scent. It's a dryer oil so it won't leave you greasy. However, other oils like argan oil, sweet almond oil, coconut oil, avocado oil and even castor oil (can be added for shine) are great options too!Really, most carrier oils work great for making your own beard balm recipe, even olive oil!
  • Instead of shea butter, you can use cocoa butter or even mango butter. Both help nourish the beard and provide a bit of stiffness. Butters are the key ingredient to a very nourishing natural beard balm.
  • Beeswax is the best wax to work with but if you are vegan, you can use carnauba wax or candelilla wax. I find the vegan waxes are harder than beeswax and could require a bit of experimenting in order to get the consistency you would like right. I personally would start by using only 1 tbsp. of wax. Let it completely cool and see how it feels. If you need more you can reheat the balm and add more.
  • Basically, you need 1/4 cup all together of oils and/or butters, add 2 tbsp. of beeswax and that's your basic beard balm recipe.
  • I also chose essential oils based on scent.Since a beard balm is close to the nose, it needs to smell good and manly. However, I did add cedarwoodbecause it helps with hair growth. This essential oil is optional for men that don't need to grow a thicker beard. However, cedarwood has a very manly, woodsy scent that works well in more masculine recipes. Feel free to use your favorite essential oils. I recommend keeping to the 12 drops to 2 ounces.

How to Use DIY Beard Balm:

Scoop out a pea sized amount and rub it between your palms. The heat from your hands will soften and “melt” the balm. Rub as much as desired onto the beard to control unruly hair.Because this diy is so concentrated, you only need a small amount of beard balm to do the job. A little goes a long way.

I don’t recommend using this balm on your head because unless your head hair is as course as your beard hair, you will end up with a pretty greasy head of hair. Never fear though-I have ahomemade hair pomaderecipe that is much better suited for the hair on top of your head!

How to Store Your DIY Beard Balm:

This recipe makes 2 ounces. A dark glass jar is the perfect container. Dark glass is not vital but it is preferred to keep the essential oils safe. Plus glass is just best for recycling and health reasons.

You can use 2 oz tins if you prefer.

Be sure to never get water in your jar. This will cause your beard balm to mold.

Since there are no water based ingredients in this recipe, you don’t need a preservative.

The shelf life is about 6 months.

What is the Difference Between a Beard Balm and a Beard Oil?

I had to consult a few beard sporting friends and family and the good ole’ internet for this question. According to my trusted sources, a beard oil is used at night after washing your face. In fact, it can be used to wash your face if you’re intoThe Oil Cleansing Methodwhich, in my opinion, is a fantastic way to detox your skin! However, if you prefer a regular cleanser, a beard oil simply acts as a moisturizer for your beard and skin.

A beard balm is used to tame and style your beard. A balm is typically used during the day and adds shine while conditioning your beard hair.

Which ever product you choose is really just your personal preference.
